Managing Computer Systems by Building Your Own Packages

Date:
February 24, 2010 - 11:00am
Location:
Galbraith Building, Room 248
Presenter/Moderator:
Alan Rosenthal

Most operating systems use "package management" systems for installing software. These packages do not merely list files; they can express a wide variety of system configuration information. Building your own packages is easier than you might think, and can be a powerful way to manage and customize large numbers of computer systems, replacing tools such as cfengine. I build custom Debian packages to do most configuration of almost all of the Debian and Ubuntu machines I manage. In this talk I will tell you how to build your own.

Online Data Retrieval System in Java

The Data Management Group provides online access to several transportation research datasets. Since late 2007 we have been rewriting this system in Java using the Apache Wicket web application framework and standard open-source tools. My presentation will cover the structure of the datasets, the functional view of the system and the implementation details. Introductory material on Wicket will be introduced and then built upon when describing how the system was implemented. The cool features of the implementation are: 1. Patricia Trie for fast AJAX auto-completing query filters. 2.

Bad Budgets to Good Technology

John DiMarco

Computer Science Research started the twenty-first century with a state-of- the-art networking and storage infrastructure, built out of best-of-breed technology. But as the infrastructure aged, no sufficient source of replacement funds could be found. Even basic maintenance of the existing equipment was becoming difficult. Unless something exceptional could be done, the research mission of the department was in jeopardy.

802.11n - The New Standard in Wireless LANs

Date:
June 25, 2009 - 9:00am
Location:
Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, 144 College Street, Room 1210

The new IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard increases data speeds by an order of magnitude compared to the legacy IEEE 802.11a/g standard. Speeds exceeding Fast Ethernet, combined with the benefits of mobility and elimination of per-port cost, make the new generation of wireless LANs a compelling alternative to traditional wired switches for the primary connectivity edge in the enterprise.

Tuning the Java Virtual Machine for Stability and Speed

Date:
June 23, 2009 - 2:00pm
Location:
BA5256
Presenter/Moderator:
John Calvin

Abstract: Memory management in the Sun Java Virtual Machine (JVM) can be hard to understand. Garbage Collection (GC), the process of cleaning-up memory after use, can have dramatic and fatal effects on application performance. Garbage Collection stop-the-World events are the primary limiting factor in sizing the JVM for large institutions. With over 50,000 active users in courses as large as 1200 students, and having over 7000 active courses, the University of Toronto encountered some very unusual problems when sizing the JVM heap on Sun T2000 hardware with 32GB of 64-bit memory.
