Drupal overview of a working site

As discussed in the last UT DUG meeting, Daryl Weade will show the decisions made in implementing a series of Drupal installs to contain the new UTSC Centre for Teaching and Learning sites. Discussion will include site objectives, modules considered for best workflow/stability, and site design.

U of T hosts Kuali Student development leader

The CIO is pleased to announce the participation of Rajiv Kaushik as a new member of the Information + Technology Services (I+TS) team.

Rajiv Kaushik joined us on Tuesday, August 3rd in the role of Director, Kuali Student Development, under a partnership arrangement with the Kuali Foundation. Now based at U of T, Rajiv will continue to lead the Kuali Student product development team of about 40 staff distributed across universities in the US and Canada.

Dr. Avi Hyman appointed as Institutional Academic Technology Strategist

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Avi Hyman has been appointed to the position of Institutional Academic Technology Strategist at the University of Toronto, effective September 1, 2010. The Institutional Academic Technology Strategist (IATS) will report to both the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the Director, Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI) and will provide strategic and tactical leadership in the development and implementation of information technology services that support the academic mission.

Agile development at its best

This is a great example of having a constructive and critical outlook on agile development. It goes to show, that an institution must be equally willing to push the envelope on innovation and as it is willing to pull the plug on doomed projects that waste valuable resources. I give kudos to Google for pulling the plug on Wave. Read the article below for more info.

The Digital Curation Institute at the University of Toronto's iSchool provides a rich, interdisciplinary environment for investigating principles and theory building related to the creation, management, use, interpretation and preservation of digital resources; conducting research on digital curation issues; and developing technologies and tools to support best practice in this area. The DCI promotes innovative multi-faceted research projects that involve collaboration among faculty, students, practitioners, and researchers both national, and internationality.

Hopefully they post the video or audio for this session!

As for how U of T compares -- I think we're on the right track with events.utoronto.ca (at least as far as event content goes), but we perhaps need to do a better job of enforcing structure within event postings, providing more custom feeds (both calendar and rss), and creating a simple way for departmental sites to use these feeds to display their specific events.
