Upcoming PERC H700 and PERC H800 Cards block non DELL certified drives (reported on linux-poweredge mailing list)

Just read that newer DELL servers (R710) with PERC H700 /H800 cards would not accept (they block) hard drives which are not "DELL certified"!!
:-(

Symantec Clustered Storage - FileStore and OFS (Object Based Filesystem)

Symantec - Confidence in a connected world

Symantec FileStore is an incredibly simple to install software-based clustered NAS appliance that offers the scalability and performance needed for the most demanding storage requirements. Examples of such storage requirements needs include geophysical data files (oil and gas exploration) and medical imaging records.

FileStore scales almost linearly with each added node, and supports up to 16 nodes and 2 PB of total storage. It will work with commodity servers and storage, resulting in high performance at low cost.

Frank Currie

Member of the Clustered Storage Group at Symantec. Focused on solutions to enable high performance NAS and Cloud storage infrastructure leveraging commodity hardware. Has worked for Symantec/VERITAS since 2000 in Support, Engineering and Product Management roles.

Hours after release, the FSF comments on the iPad

FSF activist dressed as Steve Jobs

Literally hours after its release, the Free Software Foundation already released their statement re: their general dissatisfaction with the inclusion of "digital rights management" controls in Apple's iPad operating system. They've made similar statements in the past (and then some) about the iPod touch and the iPhone platforms.

Note that "digital restrictions management" is FSF's creative misnomer of the proper term "digital rights management". Very creative indeed.

The Information Commons License Software Office Now Available on UShop!

Procurement Services is proud to announce it is launching a new UShop vendor, the Information Commons Licensed Software Office, also known on campus as the LSO. This partnership marks the first time that an internal UofT vendor is being offered online through UShop. The LSO has been offering software at educational prices to all UofT staff, faculty and students since 1990. They negotiate and administer software license agreements with various vendors in order to decrease overall software costs to the University.

U of T Drupal Users Group

Drupal

Calling all drupalistas: Interested in getting together? There seems to be a growing number of drupal-based sites at U of T, so I'm curious to see if there are enough people to make critical mass on a user group. Alternately, there is a healthy Toronto DUG that meets close to the St. George Campus. We could always join up and send a U of T contingent.

If you are intersted in participating, reply to this thread.
